# Tomplay review (2026): play-along sheet music with real recordings, and its limits

**In short.** Tomplay is a play-along practice app: more than 100,000 licensed arrangements scroll in time with recorded accompaniments, with tempo control, looping, per-track mixing and Wait Mode note feedback. It costs $19.99/month or $119.99/year, with no free scores. Native apps run on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac, but Tomplay can't open your own PDFs, so it is not a stage reader.

## Verdict: Tomplay

The best play-along practice app, with real recorded accompaniments and detailed practice controls. It cannot hold your own PDFs or ensemble parts.

- Score: 6.0/10 (calculated from 7 weighted criteria)
- Platforms: iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, Web browser
- Price: $19.99/mo, mixed pricing, no free tier
- Best for: Students and amateur players who practice with recorded accompaniment.
- Not ideal for: Musicians who need a reader for their own parts, or who want free scores.
- Facts last checked: 2026-10-06

- Overall: 6.0/10

Pros:
- Real recorded backing tracks for 100,000+ arrangements
- Tempo, loop and per-track mixing
- Native apps on iOS, Android, Windows and Mac
- Wait Mode note-recognition feedback

Cons:
- No import of your own PDFs
- $19.99/month, with no free scores
- Device and print limits per account

## Key takeaways

- Tomplay is free to download, but playing any score needs a subscription ($19.99/month, $119.99/year, or $189.99/year for the Family plan) or buying that score, typically $4.99 to $5.99, as of October 2026.
- The 14-day free trial comes only with the annual plans: Tomplay asks for payment details up front, disables printing during the trial, and you must cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
- Tomplay cannot import your own PDFs, scans or MusicXML; it only opens scores from its own catalog, so it does not replace a sheet music reader.
- Wait Mode moves the cursor only when you play the right note, detected by microphone or, since July 2026, a MIDI instrument; it does not cover guitar, drums, accordion or ensemble scores.
- One Tomplay account works on up to 3 devices (8 on the Family plan) across iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac, and downloaded scores play offline in the apps.

Tomplay is a practice app built around one idea: the score scrolls while a recorded accompaniment plays, so you rehearse with a pianist, a band or an orchestra behind you. Its catalog of more than 100,000 licensed arrangements is the product, and you pay to play it.

It is not a sheet music reader for your own parts. Tomplay can't open your PDFs, so if you need an app for gigs, rehearsals or a stand full of your own scores, start with our [overall ranking of sheet music apps](/best-sheet-music-apps/). Under our [methodology](/how-we-rank/), Tomplay has the highest platforms score of any app we cover and the lowest value score, and it scores low on library and ensemble tools.

## What is Tomplay?

Tomplay is an interactive sheet music app from Tombooks, a company based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Its arrangements scroll and turn pages in time with recordings, and you can change the tempo, loop passages and mute or rebalance each track.

The iPad app appeared in February 2016 and the Android version in January 2017. The catalog covers 26 instruments across 8 difficulty levels, from solo pieces to duet, chamber, band and orchestral accompaniments, and the developer claims about 200 new scores a week. Recordings come from Tomplay's own musicians or are licensed from partners including Deutsche Grammophon and Sony Music. Through a licensing partnership with ABRSM since 2023, Tomplay also carries official exam pieces for nine instruments: piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, viola, cello, double bass and drum kit.

## Who is Tomplay for?

Tomplay suits students, amateurs, returning players and teachers who want to practice solo or chamber repertoire with accompaniment, including ABRSM candidates on the supported instruments. Its practice controls and teacher tools are where it earns its price.

It is the wrong app if you need to read your own band, orchestra or church parts, run a gig setlist from PDFs, or play from ChordPro charts. It also doesn't suit anyone who wants a one-time purchase or a free score library; our list of [free sheet music apps](/best/free-sheet-music-apps/) covers that.

## How does practicing with Tomplay work?

You pick an arrangement for your instrument and level, press play, and the score follows a recording of the solo part and its accompaniment. From there you slow it down, loop a passage, mute the solo track or turn the accompaniment up.

Wait Mode is the main learning tool. The cursor only moves on when you play the right note, detected by the microphone or, since version 7.1 in July 2026, a MIDI instrument over USB or Bluetooth. Tomplay's help center lists guitar, drums, accordion and ensemble scores as outside Wait Mode, while bass guitar gained note recognition in version 7.2 (September 2026). Smart Page Turn listens to you and turns the page, but only on piano scores.

The player also has a tuner, an audio or visual count-off, accompaniment pitch adjustment and latency calibration. You can record yourself with or without the accompaniment and compare the take with the original: audio works everywhere, video only in the iOS and Android apps. Supported scores add a visual instrument guide, a fingering chart and note names. Version 7.0 (May 2026) added a Progress section with scales, warm-ups and ABRSM materials, and Tomplay Learn beginner courses now cover piano, saxophone and flute, all included in the subscription.

Annotation goes further than in the MuseScore app or Soundslice: fingerings, dynamics and accidentals, freehand drawing, a highlighter, text and numbered notes, saved as named layers that sync across devices and print with the score. Folders keep pieces in a custom order, and Playlist Mode opens the next score automatically.

## How does Tomplay work for teachers?

Tomplay gives teachers a practical workflow: link a student account, share an annotated score that both of you can then edit, and exchange recordings and folders. Both accounts need an active subscription and the same score, and sharing doesn't work on the website.

Teachers registered with Tomplay pay $99.99/year for the annual plan, and students they invite get a discount Tomplay doesn't publish. Schools and conservatories get custom quotes with central billing. There is no ensemble part distribution, though: no conductor or librarian roles, and no way to sync page turns across a section.

## What are Tomplay's limits?

The biggest limit is that Tomplay is a closed system. You can't import your own PDFs, scans or MusicXML; the app only opens Tomplay catalog scores.

Features also depend on the score. Transposition is limited to vocal scores and a small number of others, and only in the apps; otherwise you pick an arrangement in another key (our [transposition guide](/guides/transpose-sheet-music/) covers other routes). The multitrack mixer and visual guide aren't on every title. The metronome works only with the accompaniment off, because the recordings aren't played to a click, and only some scores include a click track.

For live use, Tomplay supports Bluetooth page turners, with AirTurn and PageFlip setups documented, but it has no synced page turns between devices, no MIDI commands for page turns and no ChordPro. Printing is capped at 4 prints a month on the monthly plan and 48 different scores a year on the annual plan, and it is disabled during the trial.

## How much does Tomplay cost, and is it worth it?

Tomplay costs $19.99/month or $119.99/year as of October 2026, and there are no free scores to play. The annual plan, which Tomplay advertises as $10 a month, is the better buy once you expect to practice for more than six months.

The app is free to download, and you can browse the catalog and hear audio previews. The Annual Family Plan costs $189.99/year for up to 5 profiles, each with its own library, annotations and recordings, on up to 8 devices. You can also buy single scores on tomplay.com, typically $4.99 to $5.99, and keep them for life; a 7-score piano collection costs $18.99. The TomTheory course is extra, at $19.99 per level for levels 2 to 8, with 50% off for subscribers.

The 14-day free trial comes only with the annual and Family plans, never with the monthly plan. Tomplay asks for payment details up front, printing is disabled during the trial, and you must cancel at least 24 hours before it ends to avoid being charged for the year.

For a student working through a syllabus with weekly lessons, $119.99 a year buys accompaniment that would otherwise take a pianist or a stack of backing tracks. If you only need three or four pieces, buying them one by one costs less. Buyers of qualifying Yamaha or Kawai instruments get 3 months free in some regions, and referral links give 20% off a first annual plan.

## Does Tomplay work on Windows, Mac and Android?

Yes. Tomplay has native apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac, and one account works on up to 3 devices (8 on the Family plan).

The iPhone and iPad app needs iOS or iPadOS 15 or later. The Android app needs Android 7.1 and runs on phones, tablets and Onyx e-ink tablets. The Mac and Windows apps are installers downloaded from tomplay.com, for macOS 12 or later and for Windows 10 (version 21H1 or later) or Windows 11; neither is listed in the Mac App Store or the Microsoft Store. Downloaded scores play offline in all of these apps.

Tomplay Web runs in desktop browsers only and needs a constant connection. Tomplay itself calls it a backup: Wait Mode, transposition, pedals, folders and sharing are app-only.

## Tomplay vs MuseScore: which should you use?

Choose Tomplay for curated, graded arrangements with recorded accompaniment and note feedback. Choose MuseScore if you want free access to a far larger community catalog and can accept playback generated from the notation and uneven arrangement quality.

The [MuseScore app](/reviews/musescore/) lets you browse and play millions of community arrangements for free, with ads, and its Pro tier adds transposition, a part mixer, a metronome and offline use. It is strong on pop, film and game music, but community scores vary in accuracy and the app has no annotation tools. Tomplay costs more, its scores are licensed and graded, its annotation and recording tools go further, and it has native Windows and Mac apps where MuseScore relies on its website.

If you would rather buy single arrangements, [Musicnotes](/reviews/musicnotes/) plays back and transposes its interactive purchases in free apps. Soundslice, which runs in the browser, suits players who learn from notation synced to real audio or video.

## What do Tomplay users report?

Store ratings are high: 4.73 out of 5 from 7,106 ratings on the US App Store and 4.74 from 15,069 on Google Play as of October 6, 2026, with more than 500,000 Google Play downloads. The documented complaints concern the 2025 redesign and the sound of some accompaniments.

The new player, released in November 2025, launched without Bluetooth pedal support, which returned in version 6.1 in December 2025, and without vertical scrolling, which arrived in version 7.2 in September 2026. Some App Store reviews describe accompaniments that sound synthetic on certain titles. Development is active, with 25 App Store releases between November 2025 and September 2026; the latest, 7.2.1, came out on September 24, 2026.

## Should you choose Tomplay?

Choose Tomplay if you practice solo or chamber repertoire and want recorded accompaniment, tempo control and note feedback on every device you own. For a student, a returning adult or a teacher who assigns pieces each week, the annual plan is fair value.

Skip it if you need to read your own music. For a PDF reader on iPad, look at [forScore](/reviews/forscore/) or the free [Piascore](/reviews/piascore/); on Android or Windows, [MobileSheets](/reviews/mobilesheets/). To hear a printed score you already own, a scanner such as [PlayScore 2](/reviews/playscore/) fits better, and our [sheet music scanner apps](/best/sheet-music-scanner-apps/) page compares the options. Pianists can see every alternative in our [best sheet music apps for piano](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-piano/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Tomplay free?

No. The app is free to download, and you can browse the catalog and hear audio previews, but playing a score requires a subscription or buying that score. The first Tomplay Learn lesson and TomTheory Level 1 are free to try, and the annual plans come with a 14-day free trial.

### How much does Tomplay cost?

As of October 2026, Tomplay costs $19.99/month or $119.99/year, and the Annual Family Plan costs $189.99/year for up to 5 profiles. Teachers registered with Tomplay pay $99.99/year. Single scores bought on tomplay.com typically cost $4.99 to $5.99 and are yours to keep.

### Can I upload my own sheet music to Tomplay?

No. Tomplay only opens scores from its own catalog; it cannot import PDFs, scans or MusicXML files. To read your own parts, use a sheet music reader such as forScore on iPad or MobileSheets on Android and Windows.

### Is Tomplay good for saxophone?

Saxophone is well covered. Tomplay carries official ABRSM exam pieces for saxophone, added a Tomplay Learn beginner course for saxophone in July 2026, and Wait Mode works with saxophone scores. As with every instrument, the multitrack mixer and visual guide depend on the score.

### Does Tomplay work offline?

Yes, in the apps. Scores you download play offline in the iOS, Android, Windows and Mac apps. Tomplay Web, the browser version, needs a constant internet connection, and syncing annotations between devices also needs a connection.

### What is a good Tomplay alternative?

The MuseScore app is cheaper, with free playback of a much larger community catalog, but its playback comes from the notation and it has no annotation. Musicnotes sells single arrangements with playback and transposition in free apps, and Soundslice syncs notation to real audio and video in the browser.
